Chapter 19 - The Verdict

The jury deliberated for less than four hours.

When they filed back into the courtroom, the tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a knife. Olivia sat in the front row of the gallery, holding Detective Miller’s hand for support. Vanessa stood at the defense table, her entire body rigid with terrified anticipation.

The judge looked down at the jury foreperson. "Has the jury reached a verdict?"

"We have, Your Honor."

"On the charge of massive corporate fraud and embezzlement, how do you find the defendant?"

"Guilty."

A loud murmur rippled through the gallery. The judge slammed his gavel.

"On the charge of assault with a deadly weapon, how do you find the defendant?"

"Guilty."

"And on the charge of attempted murder in the first degree, how do you find the defendant?"

The foreperson looked directly at Vanessa. "Guilty."

Vanessa Harrington collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands. She finally began to weep, but they were not tears of remorse; they were tears of profound, agonizing defeat. The empire she had killed to protect was gone, and her freedom had been permanently stripped away.

The judge did not hesitate. "Vanessa Harrington, you have shown zero remorse for your monstrous actions. I sentence you to forty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of parole."

The gavel slammed down with absolute, ringing finality.

Olivia let out a long, shuddering breath. The heavy, suffocating weight she had carried for over a year finally lifted from her shoulders. She turned and hugged Detective Miller, tears of profound relief streaming down her face. Justice had not just been served; it had been delivered with absolute certainty.
