Chapter 39 - The Checkmate

The massive digital screens illuminated the ballroom. They did not show charity logos. They displayed irrefutable, un-manipulated video and audio recordings.
It was the encrypted phone call Victoria had made to the cartel bosses, desperately trying to explain the missing fifty million dollars. But more damning was the second audio file Max had intercepted—a recording of Victoria explicitly ordering the heavily armed hit squad to attack Olivia’s penthouse and murder her son.
"Burn the penthouse to the ground, and bring me the boy," Victoria’s recorded voice echoed chillingly through the grand ballroom. "He is the only leverage I have left."
The collective gasp from the elite crowd was deafening. The politicians who had been speaking to Victoria just seconds ago physically recoiled from her in absolute horror.
"You orchestrated the attack on my home," Olivia stared down at Victoria from the stage, her voice ringing with undeniable, righteous fury. "You attempted to murder a child. You colluded with an international arms cartel to sell a medical miracle as a biological weapon."
Victoria stumbled backward, realizing that her elegant red dress had suddenly become a glaring target. She looked wildly around the room, searching for an escape route, but the federal agents who had initially moved to arrest Olivia had now completely surrounded Victoria.
"The deep-fake videos framing me were traced directly to your personal IP address," Olivia continued, delivering the final, fatal blow. "The FBI has already verified the metadata. My name is entirely cleared. But yours, Victoria... yours is permanently ruined."
"This is a lie!" Victoria shrieked, desperately thrashing against the federal agents as they grabbed her arms and forced them behind her back. "She staged this! She is a liar!"
The sharp, satisfying click of heavy steel handcuffs echoed through the silent ballroom, mirroring the exact sound of her mother’s arrest years prior.

"Checkmate, Victoria," Olivia whispered softly into the microphone.
Victoria Harrington was dragged out of the glittering gala, screaming and humiliated, her shadow empire completely, publicly annihilated.
