Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The grand mansion was alive with a hollow, echoing laughter as the city’s wealthiest guests gathered for an elegant engagement celebration. Crystal chandeliers, massive and glittering with thousands of individual prisms, cast a warm, golden glow across the polished hardwood floors. In the corner of the expansive ballroom, a highly paid string quartet played a soft, classical melody that was nearly drowned out by the arrogant chatter of the elite.
Servers in crisp white uniforms moved seamlessly through the crowd, carrying heavy silver trays filled with expensive champagne and delicate hors d'oeuvres. Conversations echoed through the luxurious halls, filled with empty promises, corporate gossip, and quiet judgments. It was a perfect display of immense wealth, carefully curated to hide the dark, rotting core of the family hosting it.
Near the center of the ballroom stood a young, pregnant woman named Olivia.
She was a vision of quiet grace, wearing a flowing, floor-length ivory dress that gently rested over her growing baby bump. She held a glass of sparkling water, offering polite, measured smiles to the guests who approached her. But beneath her calm exterior, her heart was beating a frantic, terrifying rhythm against her ribs.
Worry lingered heavily in her dark eyes. She felt entirely out of place in this glittering cage.

For the past three hours, Olivia could feel someone watching her. It was a heavy, suffocating gaze that seemed to track her every movement through the crowded room. She tried to focus on the pleasantries being spoken to her by a wealthy investor, but her peripheral vision constantly scanned the room, searching for the source of the malice.
She knew exactly who was watching her. She knew exactly what kind of danger she was in. But she could not leave. She had to stay exactly where she was, standing in the light, waiting for the shadows to finally make their move.
