Chapter 44 - The Ghost in the Code

Elias Blackwood’s ominous threat was not a bluff. It was a perfectly timed, ruthlessly executed preamble to a digital catastrophe. At exactly midnight, the serene silence of the Geneva penthouse was shattered by the blaring, high-pitched alarms of Arthur’s encrypted tactical laptop.
"Olivia, wake up!" Arthur shouted, already out of bed and typing frantically on the glowing keyboard. The ambient light of the screen cast harsh, frantic shadows across his face.
Olivia bolted upright, immediately rushing to his side. "What is it? Are they attacking the foundation? Is David safe?"
"David is perfectly safe, the physical perimeter is secure," Arthur assured her instantly, knowing her greatest fear. "But it’s the AI. Ouroboros isn't just blocking the diagnostic servers anymore; they are actively breaching the root architecture. They have deployed a highly sophisticated, self-replicating malware protocol into the cloud."
Olivia stared at the cascading streams of red code completely flooding the monitor. "How did they bypass our firewalls? The encryption is military-grade."
"They didn't bypass it from the outside," Arthur realized, a profound sense of horror dawning in his eyes. "They used a Trojan horse. When the World Health Organization mandated their new privacy compliance patches yesterday, our servers automatically downloaded the regulatory updates to stay legally compliant. The malware was hidden inside the WHO’s official patch."
"They weaponized a global health organization to infect us," Olivia breathed, grasping the terrifying magnitude of Blackwood’s power. "What is the malware doing?"
"It’s not destroying the AI," Arthur typed desperately, trying to isolate the infected sectors. "It’s altering the diagnostic algorithms. It’s intentionally generating false-positive cancer results and burying them in the global database. Olivia, if this goes live, the AI will misdiagnose thousands of perfectly healthy patients. The ensuing medical malpractice lawsuits will instantly, permanently bankrupt the foundation, and the public will completely lose faith in David’s legacy."
"Shut it down," Olivia commanded without a second of hesitation. "Execute the Blackout Protocol. Pull every single server offline globally. Disconnect the entire grid."
"If we shut it down, we prove Blackwood right," Arthur warned. "The media will claim the AI is unstable and dangerous. We will lose the war."

"If we let it run, we destroy innocent lives," Olivia countered fiercely, her moral compass entirely unshakeable. "David built this to save people, not to become a weapon for a pharmaceutical cartel. Shut it down, Arthur. We will fight them in the dark."
With a heavy heart, Arthur hit the final execute command. Across the globe, the Harrington-Miller AI went completely dark, leaving millions of patients waiting for miracles that would no longer arrive.
