I sat on the wooden steps of Emily’s new porch, pouring a glass of lemonade as the late afternoon sun began to dip below the treeline.
I thought back to the very beginning of this nightmare. I thought of the frantic, terrifying drive to Columbus, the absolute dread in my chest, and the sickening sight of the bruise on my daughter's wrist. I remembered the feeling of absolute powerlessness that monsters rely upon to keep their victims silent.
But looking at my daughter now, managing her own law firm, owning her own home, and raising a fearless, brilliant child, I realized the ultimate truth about survival.

As Lily ran across the grass, laughing hysterically as she chased a butterfly, Emily walked up the steps and sat beside me. She leaned her head on my shoulder, just as she had done when she was a little girl.
"We did it, Mom," Emily whispered softly into the quiet evening air.
