Chapter 31 - Courtroom Doors

The county family courthouse was a massive, imposing structure of gray stone and polished marble. We walked through the heavy glass doors at exactly 8:30 AM. Emily wore a sharp, tailored navy suit. She looked like an executive walking into a hostile takeover, completely devoid of the fragility Ryan expected.

We entered Courtroom 4B. Ryan was already sitting at the defense table. He had been bailed out by his parents the day before. He wore a crisp suit, but the dark, heavy bags under his eyes and the nervous twitch in his jaw betrayed his internal panic. Patricia and his father sat in the front row of the gallery, looking infuriated and deeply humiliated by the public spectacle.

Patricia shot me a venomous, hateful glare as we walked past them. I did not break eye contact. I offered her a slow, cold smile, letting her know that her reign of terror was officially over.

The bailiff announced the judge, a stern, no-nonsense woman with a reputation for fiercely protecting children in high-conflict cases.

"We are here for the permanent custody and protection order hearing regarding the minor child, Lily Vance," the judge stated, reviewing the thick files before her. "Counsel, are there any opening remarks before we begin testimony?"

Ryan's lawyer stood up, attempting to project a calm authority. "Your Honor, my client is a victim of a malicious, coordinated alienation campaign by his wife and her family. We intend to prove that Mrs. Vance is suffering from severe mental instability and that her allegations of abuse are entirely fabricated to secure sole custody."

Diane stood up slowly, adjusting her glasses. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't need to.

"Your Honor, we intend to prove that the only thing Mr. Vance is a victim of is the consequences of his own violent, fraudulent actions. We will demonstrate a systemic pattern of physical isolation, domestic abuse, and severe financial instability."

The trial had officially begun.
