Chapter 43 - The Ghost in the Mail

While Emily was dismantling abusers in the courtroom, an unwelcome ghost from our own past attempted to reach across the digital void.

It was a mundane Tuesday afternoon. I was checking the mail when I noticed a thick, brown envelope with a return address that made my blood instantly run cold.

FCI Elkton - Federal Correctional Institution.

It was from Ryan.

He had served five years of his federal sentence for wire fraud and identity theft. I stared at the envelope, feeling a sudden, visceral surge of the old protective rage. My first instinct was to throw it directly into the fireplace. I didn't want Emily’s hard-won peace to be disrupted by a single word from that sociopath.

But I knew my daughter. She was not a fragile thing that needed to be shielded from the truth anymore.

When Emily came home from the firm, I silently handed her the envelope. She looked at the federal seal, her jaw tightening. She didn't panic. She simply took a deep breath, walked into the kitchen, and tore it open with a kitchen knife.

"What does it say?" Mark asked, stepping into the room, his protective instincts immediately flaring.

Emily read the single sheet of lined prison paper. A cold, cynical smile touched her lips. "He is up for early parole next month due to prison overcrowding. He wrote this to beg me to write a letter of support to the parole board. He says he has 'found God' and wants to be a father to his daughter."
