Chapter 32 - Patricia's Perjury
The defense made a catastrophic tactical error right out of the gate: they called Patricia to the stand as their primary character witness.
Patricia swore an oath on the Bible and sat in the witness box, looking every inch the grieving, perfect grandmother.
"Mrs. Vance, can you describe Emily’s behavior during the weeks she lived in your home?" Ryan's lawyer asked gently.
"She was deeply unstable," Patricia lied effortlessly, dabbing a fake tear from her eye. "She was aggressive, ungrateful, and constantly picking fights with my poor son. She threw dishes. She screamed at us. We walked on eggshells in our own home just to keep her calm."
Diane stood up for the cross-examination. She approached the podium like a shark smelling blood in the water.
"Mrs. Vance, you claim Emily was violent in your home?" Diane asked smoothly.
"Yes, absolutely. She was out of control," Patricia asserted.
"And the bruising on Emily's wrist, which was documented by a triage nurse the night she fled your home. Did you witness how she received that injury?" Diane asked, pulling a medical photograph from her binder.
Patricia swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward Ryan. "Emily was clumsy. She violently tripped and slammed her arm into the heavy pantry door during one of her tantrums."
Diane smiled. "I see. Your Honor, I submit Exhibit D-4. A notarized email from Patricia Vance to her interior decorator, dated three days before Emily fled. In this email, Patricia complains that the pantry door had been completely removed from its hinges for refinishing, and asks when the contractor will return to reinstall it."
The courtroom went dead silent. Patricia’s face drained of all color.

"Mrs. Vance," Diane said, her voice ringing like a bell. "How exactly did my client slam her arm into a door that physically did not exist?"
Patricia sputtered, completely unable to form a coherent sentence. She had just been caught committing blatant perjury on the stand.
