Chapter 14 - The Gaslighting Fails

The sheer arrogance of his question, phrased to imply ownership rather than partnership, fueled the fire burning in my chest. I lifted my chin, staring him down with all the maternal authority I possessed.

"She is packing her things, and she is coming home with me tonight," I said, my voice remarkably steady despite the fear coursing through me.

Ryan let out a short, condescending laugh, but there was absolutely no humor behind it. It was a calculated sound, designed to make me feel small and hysterical.

"Emily isn’t going anywhere, Carol," he stated, taking a slow, intimidating step closer to us. "She needs peace, quiet, and stability right now. She certainly doesn't need one of your dramatic, toxic rescue missions disrupting her routine."

He turned his gaze away from me, attempting to bypass my authority entirely, and locked his eyes onto his wife. He deployed his weapon of choice: relentless gaslighting.

"Emily, tell your mother to stop this nonsense," he commanded softly, using a tone one might use on a disobedient child. "You are clearly confused and exhausted. Your mother comes down here and gets into your head every time she visits. You know you are safe here with my family. Tell her to unpack your bag."

I braced myself to shout back at him, fully prepared to physically fight him if he took another step toward her. But before I could utter a single syllable, Emily did something that completely surprised both of us.
