Chapter 44 - The Refusal

"A father?" Mark growled, his face flushing with anger. "He hasn't sent a single dime of restitution. He doesn't even know what she looks like!"
"He doesn't want to be a father," Emily said calmly, tossing the letter onto the granite counter as if it were a piece of trash. "He wants to use Lily as a prop to convince the parole board that he has a stable family environment to return to. It’s the exact same manipulation, just in a different uniform."
"What are you going to do?" I asked softly.
"Diane taught me that silence is a weapon, but the truth is a nuclear bomb," Emily stated. "I am not going to ignore it. I am going to contact the federal prosecutor. I am going to attend his parole hearing in person."

She looked at Mark and me, her eyes completely devoid of fear.
"He thought he could quietly slip out of the back door," Emily said. "I am going to make sure the door is permanently welded shut."
