Chapter 50 - The Honest Answer

Lily tilted her head, her young mind processing the information. "Like a bad guy?"
"Sometimes, people make very bad choices that hurt the people they are supposed to love," Emily explained, using language a six-year-old could grasp without being traumatized. "A long time ago, before you were born, he made choices that hurt me. And my job, as your mother, is to make sure you are always safe. So, he doesn't get to live with us or be part of our family."
Lily looked down at her Lego castle, thinking it over. "Did he go to timeout?"
Emily offered a small, genuine smile. "Yes, sweetie. He went to a very long timeout."
"Okay," Lily shrugged, entirely satisfied with the truth. "Can Grandma and Grandpa be my daddies too?"

"Grandma and Grandpa are exactly who they are supposed to be," Emily laughed, pulling Lily into a tight hug. "And you have more love in this house than you could ever possibly need."
Watching from the patio, tears pricked my eyes. The generational cycle of secrets, of hiding the ugly truths to maintain a polite facade, was officially dead. Emily was raising a daughter built on radical honesty and absolute security.
