Chapter 42 - The Echoes of Columbus

Emily’s new client was a woman named Sarah. When Sarah had first walked into the law firm three months prior, Emily had felt a sudden, profound ache in her chest. Sarah possessed the exact same defensive flinch, the same exhausted pallor, and the same terrifying silence that Emily had worn when she escaped Ryan.
Sarah’s husband was a prominent local surgeon—a man universally respected in the community, but a complete monster behind closed doors. He used his wealth and his medical knowledge to gaslight his wife, convincing her friends and family that she was suffering from severe paranoia.
Emily sat at the plaintiff's table in the county courthouse, organizing her files. Sarah sat next to her, trembling violently as her husband walked into the courtroom, wearing a perfectly tailored suit and a condescending smile.
"He looks so confident," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking. "He told me the judge plays golf with his senior partner. He said I’m going to lose my children."
Emily stopped arranging her papers. She placed a warm, steady hand over Sarah’s shaking fingers.
"Look at me, Sarah," Emily said, her voice dropping into a low, absolute register of authority. "They always look confident. Their entire power relies on the illusion of control. But the truth is, he is terrified right now. Because for the first time in his life, someone is dragging him into the light."

Sarah looked up, drawing strength from the unyielding fire in Emily’s eyes.
"We are not going to let him intimidate us," Emily promised. "Today, we break his glass house."
