Chapter 23 - The Digital Echoes

While Diane built the legal fortress, Ryan and Patricia launched a vicious, coordinated psychological assault on the only battlefield they could currently access: the internet.

A few days after the subpoena arrived, my phone began vibrating incessantly. Friends, distant relatives, and former neighbors were sending me screenshots of a public post Patricia had written on her social media page.

“My heart is completely shattered,” the post read, accompanied by a heavily filtered, tragic photo of Patricia staring wistfully out a window. “My beloved son, Ryan, is enduring a father’s worst nightmare. His unstable wife has taken our precious granddaughter away, refusing to let us see her. We are praying for Emily’s mental health, but we will not stop fighting until our baby is safely back in the loving home she deserves.”

"Do not reply to it, Carol," Mark warned me, seeing the absolute fury burning in my eyes as I read the comments. Dozens of their wealthy, ignorant friends were offering prayers and suggesting Emily needed to be institutionalized.

"They are trying to bait us," Emily said. She was sitting on the sofa, scrolling through her own phone. "Ryan just sent a mass email to our entire wedding guest list. He attached a link to a GoFundMe page, asking for donations to help cover his 'unjust legal fees to rescue his daughter'."

"He is monetizing his own abuse," I said, feeling physically sick. "He’s turning himself into a martyr."

"Let him," Emily replied, her voice remarkably calm. She locked her phone and tossed it onto the coffee table. "Every lie they post online is just another piece of rope they are handing us to hang them with. Diane said to let them talk. The louder they are now, the harder the silence will be when the truth finally comes out."

I looked at my daughter, utterly amazed by the titanium core that was rapidly forming inside her. The bruised, trembling girl I had found in Columbus was gone, replaced by a mother who was actively preparing for a siege.
