Chapter 41 - Five Years Later

Time has a remarkable way of softening the sharpest edges of our trauma, smoothing jagged memories into quiet, distant history. Five years had passed since that beautiful evening in the backyard on Lily’s first birthday.

Lily was now a vibrant, fiercely intelligent six-year-old with a mop of curly brown hair and a laugh that could brighten the darkest room. She knew nothing of the pristine, silent prison in Columbus. Her world was filled with finger paints, soccer practices, and the absolute certainty that she was surrounded by a family who adored her.

Emily had transformed entirely. She was no longer just an assistant or an advocate; she had returned to night school, passed the state bar exam with flying colors, and officially become a licensed attorney. She was now a full partner at Diane’s firm.

I stood in the kitchen of our home, packing a lunchbox for Lily’s first day of first grade. Mark was in the living room, helping Lily tie her new sneakers. The front door opened, and Emily walked in, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, a briefcase in one hand, and two cups of coffee in the other.

She looked powerful. She looked entirely unbroken.

"Big day today," Emily smiled, handing me a coffee. "For both of us. Lily starts first grade, and I am the lead counsel on my first solo custody trial."

"You are going to be brilliant," I told her, kissing her cheek. "You know exactly how to fight this."

Emily looked toward the living room, watching her daughter laugh with Mark. "I do. Because I had the best teachers in the world."
