Chapter 15 - Emily Finds Her Voice

"No," Emily said.
The word was quiet, and her voice was visibly shaky, but it rang through the tense silence of the bedroom with absolute, undeniable clarity.
Ryan stopped dead in his tracks. He turned to look at her, genuinely shocked by her defiance. I watched the last remaining shreds of his charming, controlling facade disappear completely from his face, replaced by a dark, ugly fury.
"What did you just say to me?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl.
Emily’s hands were trembling violently, clutching the fabric of her maternity shirt, but she did not look away from him. She lifted her head, and for the first time in six weeks, the strong, unyielding woman I had raised looked her abuser dead in the eye.
"I said no, Ryan," she repeated, her voice growing stronger with every syllable. "I am not confused. You took my phone away. You stole my car keys so I couldn't leave. You grabbed my arm and shoved me in the kitchen. You sit there and happily let your mother treat me like I am unpaid labor for this family."

"I am not doing this anymore. I am done."
