Chapter 25 - The Hidden Accounts
When I returned home and told Emily about the confrontation with Patricia, she didn't panic. Instead, it triggered a specific, dormant memory.
"Patricia said they would bleed us dry in court," Emily muttered, pacing the living room. "But Ryan complained about money constantly. That’s why we moved into their house. He said his firm was cutting bonuses."
Emily stopped pacing and rushed to the hall closet, pulling out the small overnight bag we had packed on the night of our escape. She dug into the side pocket and retrieved an old, heavy laptop.
"This is Ryan's old personal laptop," Emily explained, plugging it into the wall. "He gave it to me to watch streaming shows when he confiscated my phone. I never logged out of his primary email."
"Emily, what are you looking for?" Mark asked, leaning over the sofa.
"The truth," she replied, her fingers flying across the keyboard.
For two hours, Emily scoured the archived emails, the deleted folders, and the hidden financial sub-directories. Finally, she let out a sharp gasp, her hand covering her mouth.
"Mom. Dad. Look at this," Emily whispered, pointing at the glowing screen.
We leaned in. It was a chain of highly aggressive emails from a private offshore crypto-trading platform, alongside massive margin calls from a high-stakes online gambling syndicate.
"Ryan isn't fighting for custody because he loves Lily," Emily said, her voice shaking with the sheer magnitude of the betrayal. "He’s fighting for custody because if he has to pay me child support, he goes completely bankrupt. He is over two hundred thousand dollars in debt. He didn't move us into his parents' house to save for a down payment. He moved us in because he couldn't afford our apartment rent anymore."

"He was using you as a financial shield," Mark growled, staring at the screen in absolute disgust.
"Diane is going to have a field day with this," I said, a dark, victorious smile touching my lips. "He wants to play the responsible, loving provider in court? Let's show the judge exactly what he provides."
