Chapter 30 - The Eve of Trial

The night before the family court trial commenced, the atmosphere in the house was heavy but remarkably calm. The anxious, frantic terror that had defined the early days of our escape had settled into a quiet, resolute strength.

I walked into the nursery. Emily was sitting in the yellow rocking chair, holding a sleeping Lily against her chest. The soft moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting a peaceful glow over them.

"Are you ready for tomorrow?" I asked softly, leaning against the doorframe.

Emily looked down at her daughter, gently tracing the outline of Lily’s tiny ear.

"I used to think that staying quiet was the only way to keep the peace," Emily whispered, a profound sadness in her voice. "I thought if I just shrank myself down, if I just obeyed Patricia's rules and absorbed Ryan's anger, I could give Lily a normal family. I didn't realize that staying quiet was exactly what they were counting on to destroy me."

I walked over and knelt beside the rocking chair, resting my hand on her knee. "You aren't shrinking anymore, Emily. You are standing taller than anyone I know."

"Tomorrow, I am going to look him in the eye," Emily said, her voice hardening with an unbreakable resolve. "I am going to tell the judge exactly what he did to me. I am going to make sure that the permanent record shows who he really is, so that when Lily grows up, she will know that her mother fought a monster to keep her safe."

"She will know," I promised, kissing Emily’s forehead. "And we will be standing right beside you, every single step of the way."

We stayed in the quiet nursery for a long time, drawing strength from the steady, peaceful breathing of the child we were going to war to protect.
