Chapter 10 - The Spark of Rebellion

My chest tightened so fast and so fiercely that I could barely draw a breath into my lungs. The horrific reality of his physical violence and calculated emotional terrorism was undeniable.
I reached out and grabbed both of her shoulders, forcing her to look directly into my eyes.
"Listen to me right now, Emily," I said, my voice vibrating with an absolute, unyielding certainty. "Absolutely none of this is normal. None of this is your fault. He is an abuser, and he does not get to use fear to scare you into staying in this prison."
Tears spilled freely down her face, silent and utterly exhausted. "I don’t know how to get out, Mom. He has my keys. He has all my prenatal documents locked in his safe. I'm so tired."

I wiped the tears from her cheeks with my thumbs. "You don't need to figure out how to get out. I already know exactly what we are going to do."
For the first time since I had walked through that front door, I saw a tiny, fragile spark of hope ignite in her tired eyes. The paralyzing fear was still there, heavily weighing her down, but beneath it, the strong, independent woman I had raised was desperately fighting to claw her way back to the surface. The decision was made in that quiet, tear-stained moment. We were not going to wait for things to get worse. We were not going to try and reason with monsters. The kitchen had suddenly transformed from a place of servitude into a war room, and I was entirely prepared to burn this pristine suburban illusion to the ground.
