Chapter 16 - The Matriarch's Outrage

Before Ryan could formulate a response to his wife's sudden rebellion, the heavy sound of hurried footsteps echoed in the hallway outside. A few seconds later, Patricia burst through the bedroom door, clearly drawn upstairs by the raised voices.
"What on earth is going on in here?" Patricia demanded, her shrill voice cutting through the tension. She surveyed the scene—Ryan standing aggressively in the center of the room, and Emily clutching her packed bag behind me.
Patricia immediately pressed a manicured hand dramatically to her chest, playing her favorite role: the deeply wounded martyr. "A suitcase? Emily, after absolutely everything we have graciously done for you? We opened our beautiful home to you, and this is how you repay our kindness?"

I had spent years of my life biting my tongue in uncomfortable family situations. I had always tried to keep the peace, to be the polite, accommodating mother-in-law. But standing in that room, looking at the monsters who had tortured my pregnant daughter, I realized that there are specific moments in life when politeness becomes a form of betrayal. This was unequivocally one of them.
"What you have done, Patricia," I said, my voice rising in volume and power, silencing her theatrics instantly, "is systematically isolate a vulnerable, pregnant woman. You have controlled her every movement, stripped her of her dignity, and desperately tried to convince her that she has no choice but to serve you. That ends tonight."
