Chapter 19 - Crossing the Threshold

Diane looked directly at Emily, speaking with a clear, resonant authority that was meant to be heard by everyone, especially the abusers standing on the landing.

"Emily, as your legal counsel, I am advising you in front of these witnesses that you have every legal right to leave this premises immediately," Diane stated firmly. "You have every right to seek an emergency order of protection, and we will comprehensively document the bruising, the threats of kidnapping, and the unlawful isolation."

Suddenly, the massive, pristine house that had been meticulously designed to make my daughter feel so incredibly small and powerless felt claustrophobic and terrifying for the people who had controlled her. They were cornered by the law.

Emily, bolstered by the arrival of her father and her attorney, picked up her bag. She walked past Patricia, who was staring at the floor, too cowardly to speak.

As Emily reached the top of the stairs, Ryan tried one final, desperate, pathetic attempt to regain his dominance. "If you walk out that front door right now, Emily, don’t you ever expect to come back."

Emily paused on the top step. She turned her head slowly, looking at the man she had once loved. Her eyes were bright with unshed tears, but the terror was gone, replaced by an unbreakable, radiant strength.

We walked out the front door together, leaving the nightmare behind.
