Chapter 28 - The Arrest

The response from the local police was beautifully swift. The flashing red and blue strobe lights of three patrol cruisers cut through the dark, rainy night, boxing Ryan’s SUV into our driveway.
"Police! Step away from the door and put your hands on your head!" an officer commanded through an external loudspeaker.
Ryan froze. The blinding spotlights of the cruisers hit him, illuminating his disheveled, soaked suit and the absolute panic on his face. The illusion of the perfect, wealthy suburban husband completely evaporated in the glare of the police lights.
"Officers, this is a misunderstanding!" Ryan shouted, holding his hands up defensively. "This is my wife’s house! She kidnapped my daughter!"
Two officers approached him rapidly, their hands resting on their sidearms. "Sir, we have a verified protective order in our system prohibiting you from being within five hundred feet of Emily Vance. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"You can't do this!" Ryan shrieked, resisting as the officers forcefully grabbed his arms. "Do you know who my family is? My father will have your badges!"
"Save it for the judge, buddy," one of the officers grunted, slamming Ryan against the hood of his own SUV and securing the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Emily and I stepped out onto the porch, flanked by Mark. We watched in absolute, satisfying silence as the monster who had terrorized my daughter was shoved roughly into the back of a police cruiser, his head forced down by the arresting officer.

The next morning, Ryan’s mugshot was officially processed. He looked terrified, exhausted, and utterly defeated. Patricia called my cell phone twenty times before 8:00 AM, leaving hysterical, sobbing voicemails demanding that we drop the charges.
I didn't answer. I simply forwarded the audio files directly to Diane. The arrest wasn't just a violation; it was the final, devastating nail in the coffin of his custody case.
