Chapter 34 - The Financial Bombshell
With the narrative of abuse firmly established, Diane pivoted flawlessly to destroy Ryan’s final pillar of defense: his claim as a stable, responsible provider.
She called Ryan to the stand.
Ryan confidently strutted to the witness box, determined to charm his way out of the disaster his mother had created.
"Mr. Vance, you are seeking full physical custody, claiming you can provide a superior, stable environment for the child, correct?" Diane asked.
"Absolutely," Ryan smiled warmly. "I have a highly successful career in finance. I can provide everything Lily needs."
"I see," Diane nodded, walking back to her table and picking up a massive stack of subpoenaed financial records. "Let's discuss this highly successful career. Mr. Vance, why did you and Emily move into your parents' home prior to the baby’s birth?"
"To save money for a down payment on a larger house for our growing family," Ryan lied smoothly.
"Your Honor, I submit Exhibit F-1 through F-12," Diane announced, handing the documents to the bailiff. "These are the certified, subpoenaed records of Mr. Vance’s private cryptocurrency trading accounts and offshore gambling ledgers. They show a net loss of two hundred and40 thousand dollars over the past eighteen months. Furthermore, they show that Mr. Vance has completely drained his 401k and maxed out three credit cards illegally opened in Emily’s name."
Ryan’s confident smile vanished. He gripped the edge of the witness box, his knuckles turning white.
"You didn't move into your parents' house to save money, Mr. Vance," Diane stated, her voice echoing powerfully. "You moved in because you were facing eviction from your apartment, your wages were being garnished, and you are drowning in a quarter of a million dollars in illicit debt. You are financially ruined."

"That money is tied up in investments!" Ryan exploded, entirely losing his temper on the stand. "You have no idea how finance works! I was securing our future!"
"You were stealing your wife’s identity to fund a gambling addiction," Diane corrected him coldly. "No further questions."
