Chapter 53 - The New House

With her new promotion and a thriving career, Emily made a massive decision. She loved living with us, but it was time for her and Lily to have a sanctuary of their own.
She bought a beautiful, historic home three streets down from our house. It had a massive wraparound porch, original hardwood floors, and a huge backyard with a towering oak tree.
On moving day, Mark and I helped carry boxes into the bright, sunlit living room. Lily was already running through the empty halls, claiming the largest bedroom as her own.
"It's perfect, Emily," I said, setting a box of kitchen supplies on the counter.

Emily stood in the center of the living room, looking around. She had bought this house with her own money. Her name, and only her name, was on the deed. Nobody could ever take her keys. Nobody could ever lock her in the pantry.
"It’s ours," Emily whispered, a profound sense of ownership and peace settling over her. "It’s really ours."
