Chapter 54 - The Garden

The first thing Emily did in her new home was build a garden.
She spent an entire weekend digging up the soil in the backyard, building raised wooden beds, and planting tomatoes, basil, and bright yellow marigolds. Lily was right beside her, her hands covered in mud, happily burying seeds in the earth.
I walked over from our house, carrying a pitcher of lemonade, and watched them from the porch.
Emily wiped the sweat from her brow, looking at the rich, dark soil. She wasn't just planting vegetables; she was rooting herself into the earth. She was proving that she could nurture life, cultivate beauty, and build something entirely her own from the ground up.
"Mom, look!" Lily shouted, proudly holding up a perfectly formed, bright red tomato she had just picked.
