Chapter 3 - The Flashing Bruise

The tension in the air was so thick it felt suffocating. Emily hurriedly stepped close to me, strategically positioning her body so that Patricia and Ryan could not see her face clearly. She leaned in, the scent of her lavender shampoo masked by the smell of dish soap and exhaustion.
“Mom, please… don’t say anything,” she whispered frantically, her voice barely a breath. Her free hand immediately went to her swollen belly in a protective, comforting gesture, and I saw that her fingers were trembling violently.
It was in that fleeting movement that my eyes caught something horrifying. As she reached for her stomach, the sleeve of her oversized maternity sweater rode up her arm just a few inches. There, stark and ugly against her pale skin, was a massive bruise. It was yellow-purple and fading at the edges, located just above her delicate wrist. The shape of it was unmistakable; it looked exactly like the imprint of someone grasping her arm with brutal, crushing force.
My heart dropped directly into my stomach, turning to a block of ice. “Emily,” I whispered back, my voice shaking with restrained terror. I gently reached out and grabbed her uninjured arm. “What happened to you?”
She pulled her sleeve down so aggressively and so fast that the motion was purely reflex, a conditioned response born of deep fear. She refused to meet my eyes, staring intensely at the hardwood floor. “I bumped into the heavy pantry door yesterday,” she muttered quickly.

Patricia, who had been watching us like a hawk, let her sharp smile widen just a fraction. “She’s been terribly clumsy lately,” Patricia called out, her voice echoing in the hallway. “Pregnancy completely ruins a woman’s balance, doesn't it?”
I turned my gaze back to Ryan, waiting, praying for him to say something to defend his wife. But he only stared blankly down at his smartphone, entirely disconnected from the cruelty unfolding in his own home.
