Chapter 18 - The Cavalry Arrives

The oppressive silence in the bedroom was suddenly shattered by the crunch of heavy gravel outside the window. I turned my head just in time to see the bright headlights of Mark’s heavy-duty truck aggressively swinging into the driveway, illuminating the immaculate lawn. I heard the heavy thud of his car door slamming shut with purposeful force.
A few seconds later, the sharp, authoritative ring of the front doorbell echoed up the stairs. It wasn't just Mark. I had received a text minutes earlier—Diane, my fierce, retired attorney neighbor, had literally driven herself over from the next town the moment she realized the severity of my messages.

I will never, for the rest of my life, forget the profound, pathetic change in Ryan’s expression when he heard the commotion downstairs. He realized in an instant that we had not come empty-handed, and more importantly, that we were not bluffing. His isolated kingdom was being breached.
I walked past them, opening the front door. Diane stepped inside first, calm, direct, and carrying a heavy leather briefcase. She didn't bother with pleasantries. She walked straight to the base of the stairs, introducing herself by her full legal name and her professional credentials. Her presence alone sucked the remaining air out of Ryan's sails.
