Chapter 39 - The First Birthday

Exactly one year after our harrowing escape in the middle of the night, the atmosphere in our backyard was completely unrecognizable.

It was a brilliant, sunny Saturday afternoon. The trees were lush and green, and the air was filled with the sounds of upbeat music and genuine, unfiltered laughter. We were celebrating Lily’s first birthday.

The yard was decorated with bright yellow balloons and a massive, colorful banner reading Happy Birthday Lily! Friends, neighbors, and family members were gathered around the patio, eating barbecue and enjoying the perfect summer day. Diane, who had become a cherished, lifelong friend, was sitting in a lawn chair, happily feeding Lily a piece of smash cake.

I stood near the edge of the garden, watching the scene unfold with a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude.

Emily walked up beside me, holding two glasses of iced tea. She handed one to me. She was glowing. She had recently started a new career, working alongside Diane as a legal advocate for victims of domestic abuse, using her own harrowing experience to help other women navigate the terrifying process of escaping their abusers.

"She is having the time of her life," Emily smiled, watching Lily giggle as Mark chased her across the grass.

"She is," I agreed, wrapping my arm around my daughter’s waist. "Because she is safe. Because she will never know the fear we had to fight."

"We fought a good war, Mom," Emily whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"The best war," I replied. "And we won the only prize that mattered."
