Chapter 33 - The Bruise Documented

The judge stared down at Patricia over her glasses, her expression hardening into absolute disgust.
"You may step down, Mrs. Vance," the judge commanded sharply. "And I strongly advise you to consult with independent legal counsel regarding the penalties for perjury in this state."
Patricia practically scrambled out of the witness box, her perfect, aristocratic facade completely obliterated. Ryan buried his face in his hands at the defense table, realizing his mother had just destroyed his credibility.
Diane immediately called the emergency room triage nurse to the stand.
The nurse, a calm, professional woman, reviewed her notes from the night we arrived in town.
"Can you describe the patient’s physical and emotional state upon intake?" Diane asked.
"The patient, Emily Vance, was exhibiting classic signs of acute domestic trauma," the nurse testified clearly. "She was hyper-vigilant, tachycardic, and exhibited a severe defensive flinch response. Furthermore, I documented a severe, deep-tissue contusion on her right wrist. The bruising pattern was consistent with a violent, localized grip, specifically the imprint of human fingers gripping with extreme, crushing force. It was not consistent with a blunt-force impact against a flat surface, such as a door."
"Thank you, nurse," Diane said, turning to the judge. "Your Honor, the medical evidence directly contradicts the defense’s narrative and fully supports my client's testimony of physical assault."

Ryan’s lawyer attempted to cross-examine the nurse, suggesting that Emily could have asked someone else to grab her arm to stage the injury. The judge openly scoffed at the ridiculous notion, shaking her head.
The physical evidence of the bruise—the very bruise Patricia and Ryan had tried to gaslight Emily into hiding—was now permanently cemented into the legal record. The invisible chains of their control were being snapped, link by link, in the cold light of the courtroom.
