Chapter 47 - A Ghost in the Aisle

While Ryan was permanently locked away, his mother was still wandering the earth, paying the price for her own complicity.

A few days after the parole hearing, I was shopping at a large, upscale outdoor mall a few towns over, looking for a birthday gift for Mark. As I walked out of a department store, I saw a woman sitting on a public bench.

It was Patricia.

But it took me a full minute to recognize her. The immaculate, terrifying matriarch of the Columbus country club was gone. She was wearing a cheap, mismatched sweater. Her hair, once perfectly styled, was gray and unkempt. She looked exhausted, aged ten years in the span of five.

I later learned that after Ryan’s conviction, her husband had divorced her to salvage his own remaining reputation. She had been left with almost nothing, forced to move into a small apartment in a town where nobody knew her name.

She looked up and made eye contact with me. I saw a sudden, pathetic flash of hope in her eyes. She stood up, taking a hesitant step toward me.

"Carol?" Patricia whispered, her voice trembling. "Is that you?"
