Chapter 49 - The Hard Questions

Life moved on flawlessly. Emily won Sarah’s custody case in a spectacular, devastating trial that made the local news. Emily was quickly gaining a reputation as the fiercest, most brilliant family law attorney in the state.

But as Lily grew older, the inevitable questions began to surface.

It happened on a quiet Sunday afternoon. Mark and I were in the garden, and Emily was sitting on the living room floor with Lily, building a massive Lego castle.

"Mommy?" Lily asked, pressing a yellow brick into place. "Emma at school has a daddy who picks her up. Why don't I have a daddy?"

I froze on the patio, looking through the glass door. This was the moment we had spent six years preparing for.

Emily didn't panic. She didn't lie, and she didn't deflect. She set her Lego down and looked her daughter directly in the eyes.

"You do have a father, Lily," Emily said gently, her voice calm and steady. "But he is not a safe person."
