Chapter 17 - The Bruise Revealed

Patricia’s face hardened into a mask of pure indignation, her eyes flashing with venom. Ryan, eager to regain control of the narrative, took an aggressive step forward, pointing an accusing finger directly at my face.

"You are completely out of your mind, Carol," Ryan shouted, abandoning his calm demeanor. "You have absolutely no proof of anything you're saying! You're just a hysterical woman trying to ruin my marriage!"

"Proof?" Emily whispered.

The single word stopped Ryan's tirade. Emily didn't yell. She didn't cry. With a terrifyingly calm deliberation, she reached across her body, grabbed the cuff of her oversized maternity sweater, and aggressively shoved the sleeve high up her arm.

She thrust her arm forward, thrusting it directly under the harsh, bright glare of the bedroom ceiling light. The massive, ugly bruise had darkened significantly since the afternoon, the yellow and deep purple edges contrasting sharply with her pale skin. It was an undeniable, horrific map of violence.

"Here is your proof, Ryan," Emily said, her voice dripping with absolute disgust.

For the first time since I had arrived, both Ryan and Patricia went completely, utterly silent. The air in the room grew stagnant. The undeniable physical evidence of his brutality was bared for all to see, completely shattering their pristine, perfect suburban illusion into pieces they could never put back together.
