Chapter 37 - The Verdict

The judge did not need to deliberate for long. She returned to the bench after a brief twenty-minute recess, her expression a mask of absolute, unyielding judicial authority.

"This court has heard the testimony and reviewed the overwhelming, irrefutable evidence presented today," the judge began, her voice echoing with finality.

"Mr. Vance, your actions demonstrate a profound, terrifying pattern of domestic abuse, coercive control, and severe financial instability. Furthermore, your blatant violation of a temporary protective order, which resulted in your arrest, proves to this court that you pose an active, immediate danger to the physical and emotional wellbeing of both the mother and the minor child."

Ryan sat frozen, his jaw slack.

"I am hereby granting sole legal and sole physical custody of the minor child, Lily Vance, to the mother, Emily Vance," the judge declared, striking her gavel. "Mr. Vance, you are granted absolutely no visitation rights at this time. Should you wish to petition for supervised visitation in the future, you must first successfully complete a fifty-two-week, court-monitored batterer intervention program, as well as mandatory psychiatric evaluation and gambling addiction treatment."

The judge turned a cold glare toward the gallery, directly at Patricia.

"Furthermore, the permanent order of protection is extended to include both Mr. Vance and his immediate family members. Any attempt to contact, stalk, or harass Mrs. Vance or the child will result in immediate felony incarceration."

Emily let out a long, shuddering breath, burying her face in her hands as Diane wrapped a comforting arm around her shoulders.

I grabbed Mark’s hand, tears of absolute, overwhelming relief streaming down my face. The war was officially over. We had won. The monster had been stripped of his power, his mask destroyed in the light of the truth.
