Chapter 6 - The Secret of the Silver

Eleanor’s thumb slowly, agonizingly traced the intricate, worn engravings along the heavy clasp of the bracelet.

Then, she whispered something that made Claire’s heart completely stop beating in her chest.

"The true message was never meant to be read on the outside..."

Before Claire could pull her hand away or ask what she meant, Eleanor pressed her fingernail into a nearly microscopic, hidden groove tucked beneath the primary clasp.

Click.

The heavy silver bracelet popped open.

Claire gasped. She had worn the bracelet every single day for thirty-two years, and she had never known it could open.

The heavy silver parted, revealing a hidden, pristine interior compartment that had been sealed shut for decades. Engraved perfectly into the untouched, shining silver inside were three distinct letters:

E. W. C.

Eleanor Crawford broke. A profound, soul-shattering sob tore from the billionaire's throat.

"Evangeline Waverly Crawford..." Eleanor wept, pressing her forehead against Claire's trembling hand. "My Evie..."

The lobby was paralyzed. Guests stared in open-mouthed shock.

Claire felt the marble floor swaying beneath her. "What... what does this mean?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Eleanor looked up, her mascara running, her face an open wound of thirty years of grief and sudden, blinding hope. "My daughter was kidnapped from her nursery when she was three months old."

A collective murmur of shock rippled through the gathered crowd.

"I had this bracelet custom-forged by a master jeweler in Paris," Eleanor continued, her voice gaining a desperate strength. "It is entirely unique. There is not another one like it on the face of this earth. Only I knew about the hidden clasp."

Claire’s mind spun into a terrifying vertigo. "No... that’s impossible. I'm an orphan..."

"I have spent thirty-two years tearing this world apart looking for you," Eleanor sobbed, gripping Claire’s hands tightly.
