Chapter 41 - The Unbroken Dawn

The golden light of the fading sun gave way to the brilliant, electric glow of the Chicago skyline.

Evangeline Waverly Crawford remained standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows of her penthouse office, holding little Leo tightly against her chest. The toddler rested his head peacefully on her shoulder, his steady breathing a quiet, miraculous rhythm against the quiet hum of the city below.

The heavy oak doors of the office clicked open with a soft, elegant whisper.

Eleanor walked into the room, her silver hair catching the ambient light. She did not wear the armor of a ruthless billionaire tonight; she wore the soft, unburdened expression of a mother who had finally brought her daughter home.

"He is sleeping deeply,"

Eleanor whispered, stepping up beside Evangeline and gently stroking Leo’s dark hair.

"He is completely safe,"

Evangeline replied, her voice filled with absolute, unshakeable certainty.

"We built an impenetrable wall around him, Mom. The monsters can never touch him."

Eleanor looked out at the sprawling, glittering empire that bore their name.

"You have conquered the shadows, Evie,"

Eleanor smiled, her eyes shining with profound pride.

"But you must remember, power in this city never truly rests. When you cut off the head of a snake, the venom sometimes lingers in the soil."
