Chapter 32 - The Absolute Checkmate

Panic finally registered on the faces of the syndicate mercenaries. They were trapped like rats in a concrete cage.
"Thirty-two years ago, your organization stole me from my mother,"
Evangeline stated, her voice dropping to a freezing, lethal register.
"You thought you could control me. You thought you could use Richard Sterling to steal my empire."
She raised her hand, signaling David, who was standing in the shadows behind her.
"The vault you are currently standing in has been entirely reinforced. There is no cell service. There is no radio signal. And in exactly five seconds, the ventilation system will flood the room with a highly concentrated, non-lethal knockout gas."
"No! Breach the doors!"
Kaelen screamed frantically, his men scrambling to plant explosives on the heavy steel exit.
"One,"
Evangeline counted down, completely unfazed by their panic.

A thick, white vapor began to pour from the ceiling vents.
The mercenaries began to choke, dropping their weapons, collapsing heavily onto the cold concrete floor. Within twenty seconds, Kaelen fell to his knees, his eyes rolling back in his head, entirely unconscious.
