Eleanor walked into the penthouse living room that evening, her face uncharacteristically pale. She was holding a thick, encrypted dossier.
"Evie," Eleanor said, her voice grave. "Richard didn't meet you by accident."
Claire sat up on the sofa, a cold knot forming in her stomach. "What do you mean?"
"The private investigators ran a deep-level background check on him to ensure your divorce was airtight," Eleanor explained, sitting down heavily. "They found encrypted communications going back five years. Richard was heavily in debt to a major organized crime syndicate in Eastern Europe."
Claire frowned, completely confused. "What does that have to do with me?"
"That syndicate," Eleanor whispered, her eyes filling with terror, "is the exact same criminal organization that kidnapped you thirty-two years ago."

"They never lost track of you, Evie. They knew exactly where you were in the foster system. They planted Richard into your life to keep tabs on you, to ensure you never discovered your true identity, and to legally position himself to inherit your biological claim to my fortune should I ever find you."
The betrayal was so vast, so deeply woven into the fabric of her life, that Claire felt physically sick. Her entire marriage, her entire life, had been a meticulously constructed prison.
