Chapter 38 - The Ghost of Claire

After the press conference, Evangeline walked alone into her massive, glass-walled executive office.
She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling, beautiful city of Chicago.
She thought about Claire. She thought about the timid, terrified, heavily pregnant woman kneeling on the freezing marble floor of the Grand Belmont Hotel, begging a monster for mercy.
She realized that she didn't hate Claire.
Claire had survived the unimaginable. Claire had endured the emotional torture, protected her unborn child, and survived just long enough for Evangeline to be born in the fire.

Evangeline whispered softly to the ghost of her past.
