Chapter 10 - The First Embrace

A calm, highly professional obstetrician pressed a cool ultrasound monitor to Claire’s stomach.

The room held its breath.

Suddenly, the rapid, strong, beautiful thump-thump-thump of a tiny heartbeat echoed through the quiet bedroom.

Claire burst into heavy, racking sobs of profound relief.

"The baby is perfectly fine," the doctor smiled warmly, removing the monitor. "Your cervix is closed. You are experiencing severe Braxton-Hicks contractions induced by extreme emotional and physical stress. You need bed rest, hydration, and absolute peace."

Eleanor, who had been standing rigidly by the door, completely collapsed against the wall, weeping openly. "Thank God," she whispered.

When the medical team quietly exited the room, leaving them alone, Eleanor slowly approached the bed. She sat on the edge, looking at Claire as if she were a miracle conjured from thin air.

She reached out, gently taking Claire’s hand.

"I never, ever stopped looking for you," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling. "Every private investigator, every database, every lead for three decades."

Claire looked at the powerful, fierce woman. "I grew up believing I was entirely unlovable," Claire admitted, her voice breaking. "I thought I was thrown away."

Eleanor leaned forward, wrapping her arms carefully around Claire’s shoulders, pulling her pregnant daughter into a deep, desperate embrace.

"You are the most loved person on the face of this earth," Eleanor vowed, kissing her hair.

For the very first time in thirty-two years, Claire finally knew what it felt like to be held by a mother.
