Chapter 9: James's Last Secret

### Chapter 9: James's Last Secret

Arthur couldn't stop thinking about the key.

It was old.

Solid brass.

The edges were worn smooth from years of use.

On the faded paper tag...

James's handwriting remained unmistakable.

For Arthur. When needed.

Not...

"For Sarah."

Not...

"For my attorney."

For Arthur.

That meant James had trusted him with something long before his death.

Something no one else was supposed to know.

---

The drive to the farmhouse was quiet.

Sarah rested in the passenger seat.

One hand gently covered her stomach.

The baby had been unusually active all afternoon.

Dr. Carter had smiled before discharging her.

"She's letting you know she's still fighting."

Sarah smiled every time she felt another kick.

It reminded her why she couldn't give up.

Arthur glanced at her.

"We'll stay at the farmhouse tonight."

"Tomorrow..."

"I'm going back to the mansion."

Sarah looked at him.

"For the key?"

He nodded.

"I think James left us something."

---

The farmhouse belonged to Arthur's younger brother, Thomas Hale.

It sat deep in the countryside.

Surrounded by oak trees.

Hidden from the main road.

No reporters.

No photographers.

No curious neighbors.

Thomas opened the front door before they reached the porch.

He immediately embraced Arthur.

Then looked gently toward Sarah.

"You're safe here."

Sarah smiled gratefully.

"Thank you."

Thomas shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward Arthur.

"I'm thanking him."

"For finally doing what James always hoped he would."

Arthur frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Thomas looked surprised.

"He never told you?"

Arthur slowly shook his head.

Thomas hesitated.

"James visited me three years ago."

Arthur blinked.

"What?"

"He asked me one question."

"If anything ever happens to Sarah..."

"...will you hide her?"

The room became silent.

Arthur felt his heart sink.

James...

Had expected danger years before he died.

---

The next morning...

Arthur returned alone to the Vance mansion.

Police tape still surrounded sections of the estate.

Sergeant Reyes met him at the entrance.

"You came for the key."

Arthur nodded.

"I think I know where it belongs."

She smiled.

"Let's find out."

---

James's private study remained exactly as investigators had left it.

Books lined the walls.

Family photographs sat neatly on the shelves.

Everything reflected quiet discipline.

Arthur slowly walked toward the fireplace.

He remembered something James used to do.

Whenever important business discussions ended...

James would casually rest one hand on the carved wooden mantle.

Always...

The exact same spot.

Arthur reached toward the carving.

Ran his fingers beneath the polished wood.

Click.

A tiny hidden compartment opened.

Sergeant Reyes stared.

"I never would've found that."

Inside...

There was a small steel lockbox.

Arthur removed it carefully.

The brass key fit perfectly.

The lock clicked open.

Inside were three items.

A handwritten letter.

A USB flash drive.

And a velvet jewelry box.

Arthur opened the letter first.

James's handwriting filled every page.

---

Arthur,

If you're reading this...

I was right to be afraid.

Arthur stopped breathing.

He continued reading aloud.

"I don't know whether I'm already dead..."

"...or simply unable to protect Sarah anymore."

"If Eleanor has crossed the line I feared..."

"...then I need you to finish what I couldn't."

Sarah's name appeared again.

And again.

James had written page after page about protecting her.

Finally...

One sentence made Arthur's hands tremble.

I no longer believe Eleanor is acting alone.

Sergeant Reyes looked up sharply.

Arthur continued.

Someone inside my own company has been feeding her information for years.

I never discovered who.

But I recorded everything I could.

Arthur slowly picked up the USB drive.

---

Back at the farmhouse...

Sarah was helping Thomas prepare lunch.

For the first time in days...

She laughed.

A real laugh.

The baby kicked.

Thomas smiled.

"I think she approves."

Sarah placed both hands on her stomach.

"I hope she grows up somewhere peaceful."

Before Thomas could answer...

A pickup truck stopped outside.

Neither of them recognized it.

A middle-aged man stepped out.

Wearing work boots.

Holding a clipboard.

He knocked politely.

Thomas opened the door halfway.

"Can I help you?"

The stranger smiled.

"Package delivery."

Thomas frowned.

"We're not expecting anything."

The man checked his clipboard.

"Delivery for Sarah Vance."

Sarah stepped closer.

"I didn't order anything."

The stranger smiled again.

"Just sign here."

Something about his eyes...

Made Thomas uneasy.

He looked toward the truck.

No company logo.

No delivery uniform.

No identification badge.

Thomas quietly closed the door another few inches.

"What company?"

The man's smile faded.

"You don't need to know."

Thomas's expression hardened.

"I think I do."

For several long seconds...

Nobody moved.

Then...

The stranger calmly lowered the clipboard.

"I was hoping this would be easier."

He reached inside his jacket.

Thomas reacted instantly.

Slamming the heavy wooden door shut.

At that exact moment—

Bang!

A gunshot shattered the afternoon silence.

The bullet tore through the front door...

Missing Thomas by inches.

Sarah screamed instinctively...

Wrapping both arms around her baby.

Thomas grabbed the old hunting rifle hanging above the fireplace.

"Get down!"

Another shot exploded through the front window.

Glass rained across the living room.

Outside...

The fake delivery driver sprinted back toward his truck.

Its tires screamed against the gravel road.

By the time Thomas reached the porch...

The pickup had already disappeared into the trees.

---

Twenty minutes later...

Sheriff's deputies surrounded the farmhouse.

Arthur arrived just as investigators finished collecting the bullets.

His face turned pale when he saw the shattered window.

He rushed inside.

"Sarah!"

She stood slowly.

Shaking...

But unharmed.

Arthur hugged her without saying a word.

Only after several seconds did she whisper,

"He wasn't trying to scare me."

Arthur looked into her frightened eyes.

"No."

"He came to finish what Eleanor started."

At that same moment...

Back inside James's study...

A forensic technician finally accessed the USB drive.

One folder appeared on the screen.

Its title contained only two words.

Board Members

Inside...

Were dozens of secretly recorded meetings.

Financial records.

Voice recordings.

And one video file.

Recorded six months before James died.

The thumbnail showed James sitting across from someone.

The other person's face wasn't visible.

Only their voice.

The technician clicked play.

James spoke first.

"If anything happens to Sarah..."

"...it will be because of you."

Then...

The unknown man answered.

A calm...

Cold...

Familiar voice.

"You've always overestimated your importance, James."

Sergeant Reyes froze.

She had heard that voice before.

Recently.

Very recently.

May you like

She just couldn't remember where.

To be continued...
