Chapter 29: Escape to Nowhere

Chapter 29: Escape to Nowhere

The rain had stopped by the time the sun began to peek over the Ohio horizon, painting the sky in bruises of purple and gold.

A rusted gray delivery van—taken from the bank’s rear loading zone—idled at a small rest stop overlooking Lake Erie.

Inside, Sarah sat in the driver's seat, her hands gripped tightly around the wheel. Thomas Hale was outside, speaking quietly on a burner phone, his face anxious as he watched the highway entrance.

In the passenger seat, Mrs. Hargrove was awake, a white bandage wrapped neatly around her head. She looked at Sarah with a mixture of sorrow and profound respect.

"You destroyed the legacy, Sarah," the old woman said softly. "James’s father, James himself... they spent fifty years building that wall of money. You tore it down in five seconds."

"I didn't destroy a legacy, Penelope," Sarah said, her voice steady, her eyes reflecting the cold light of the lake. "I freed my daughter. As long as that server existed, she wasn't a human being. She was a checkbook."

Thomas opened the van door, stepping inside. "Arthur just cleared the vault with Reyes. Julian is in federal custody, but the board is already filing for Chapter 11 protection. The asset freeze is global. The news is calling it the 'Vance Collapse.'"

He looked at Sarah. "Arthur knows you took the van. He told Reyes to loop the state border cameras, but he gave us a twenty-minute head start. He’s going back to Chicago to handle the fallout."

"Does he know where I'm going?" Sarah asked.

Thomas shook his head. "Nobody knows. Not even me. Where do you want me to drop you off, Sarah?"

Sarah looked back at baby Hope, who had just opened her eyes. They were a brilliant, piercing blue—the exact same shade as Leo’s. The same shade as James’s.

"Drop us off at the train station in Cleveland," Sarah said. "From here on out... we don't exist."
