Chapter 68: The Choice of the Flesh

Sarah’s finger hesitated on the trigger. She looked at the screen, then at her daughter, who was staring up at her with those impossibly bright blue eyes.

"Is it true?" Sarah whispered, her voice shaking for the first time in months. "Is she sick?"

"The markers are already active, Sarah," her father said, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading tone. "Why do you think she was born eight months early? Why do you think her heart was beating so fast in that hospital? She doesn't need a mother who runs. She needs a laboratory that can keep her cells from collapsing."

Leo laughed through the blood in his mouth as he twisted the wire tighter around Arthur’s neck. "She's ours, Sarah. She always was."

Arthur’s face was turning purple, his hands clawing at the wire saw. He looked at Sarah through the haze of his failing vision. He didn't tell her to shoot. He didn't tell her to run.

He just looked at the server core.

I protect the flag.

Sarah understood. The flag wasn't the money. It wasn't the legacy. It was the truth.

With a deafening cry, Sarah turned her weapon away from Leo and fired three consecutive rounds straight into the central liquid-nitrogen coolant pipe running above the server core.

BOOM!

The pipe ruptured, a massive blast of sub-zero gas and ice exploding directly over the server racks and the computer terminal. The screens shattered. The data corrupted in a flash of blue static. The entire medical wing began to freeze, the white frost spreading across the floor like a winter storm.
