Chapter 65: The Extraction Core

"We don't need your permission anymore, daughter," Thomas Sterling said. He raised his hand, and four Aegis snipers stepped out from the shadows of the upper crane deck, their red laser dots locking onto Sarah’s chest.

"Arthur," Sarah said quietly, without looking at him. "Do you remember what you said to me in the hospital room? When Hope was born?"

Arthur’s jaw tightened, his fingers steady on his weapon. "I told you she was a fighter."

"She is," Sarah whispered.

In one sudden, terrifying motion, Sarah didn't draw her gun. She reached down, unclipped the master safety valve on the massive industrial liquid-nitrogen tank used to cool the ship's laboratory containers, and smashed the iron pressure gauge with the butt of her gun.

HISSSSSSS!

A blinding, freezing cloud of white chemical gas erupted across the deck, dropping the temperature instantly to sub-zero. The Aegis snipers lost their visual, their thermal scopes blinded by the sudden cryogenic fog.

Pop-pop-pop!

Arthur moved through the white haze like a phantom, his weapon barking as he neutralized the two closest guards. Sarah didn't run toward the bridge. She sprinted into the dark mouth of the lower cargo hold, down the iron stairs into the belly of the beast.
