Chapter 38: The Red Night

"He's insane," Reyes's voice came through Arthur's earpiece. "Julian killed his security detail. He has a group of radical ex-Vance operatives with him. They're heavily armed, Arthur. They're coming to eliminate everyone and seize the infrastructure."

Thomas Sterling looked at the monitor, his jaw tightening. For the first time, the billionaire looked rattled. "Julian is a rabid dog. He’ll burn the world down just to reign over the ashes."

"He's coming for the baby, Thomas," Arthur said, stepping next to Sarah, his weapon raised toward the door. "He knows Hope is the ultimate biometric bypass. If he gets her, he can override James's system manually."

Sarah looked between Arthur—the man who had shattered her past—and Sterling—the man who wanted to buy her future. She realized there was no safe harbor. The wolves were circling the marsh.

"We have to go to Chicago," Sarah said suddenly.

Arthur looked at her in surprise. "Sarah, that's exactly what Julian wants."

"No," Sarah said, her voice rising with absolute authority. "Julian wants me running. I am done running. If we go to the Chicago hub, we can use my code to lock him out of the infrastructure permanently. But we need an army to get inside the tower."

She looked at her father. "You have Aegis. Arthur has the tactical skill. You two hate each other, but if Julian kills my daughter, both of your legacies are dead."

Sterling studied his daughter for a long moment, a slow, dark pride appearing in his eyes. "An alliance of necessity. Very well. My men are yours, Captain Hale. For now."

Arthur looked at Sterling, then at Sarah. "If we do this... we do it my way."
