Chapter 55: The Geneva Ledger

Sarah stared at the keypad. She had no codes. No keycards.

Behind her, Arthur’s shadow appeared at the end of the corridor. He didn't have his weapon raised. He looked at her with a strange, dark pity.

"The code is James’s military service number, Sarah," Arthur said quietly. "0-4-1-7-9-9."

Sarah looked at him, stunned. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Because Leo is five minutes behind me," Arthur whispered, his voice bare. "And because I lied to him. I didn't join The Consortium to help him. I joined them to find out where the central server for the Zurich fund is. It’s behind that door. The Geneva Ledger."

Sarah’s fingers flew across the keypad. 0-4-1-7-9-9.

The heavy steel door groaned, sliding open into a massive, subterranean vault lit by a single, blinding blue core. It was the nerve center of the entire European shadow banking system.

"Arthur..." Sarah said, stepping inside.

"James knew Leo was alive," Arthur said, standing at the threshold. "The letter he gave you... the one that told you not to trust me... he knew I’d have to play the double agent to get you into this room. If you scan Hope's biometric profile here, it doesn't just encrypt the Vance files. It deletes the entire Consortium directory. It destroys them forever."

"And what happens to you?"

Arthur smiled sadly, pulling a grenade from his vest. "I hold the door."
