Chapter 27: The Stand at the Core

Arthur stood between Julian’s men and Sarah, his hand drifting toward his holster. "Julian, you brought federal uniforms into a bank vault. That’s a line you can't cross back over."
"The uniforms are real, Arthur," Julian chuckled. "I bought the regional director five years ago. According to the official record, you are currently holding a civilian hostage inside a federal depository. If my men open fire, it’s a standard intervention."
"Not if the world is watching," Sergeant Reyes’s voice echoed from the stairwell.
She walked into the vault bay, holding a live-streaming smartphone connected directly to the Chicago Tribune’s main network. Behind her were six state troopers, their rifles aimed squarely at Julian’s private force.
"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, attempted murder of a minor, and state-level treason," Reyes said, her voice dripping with venom.
Julian’s smile didn't fade. He looked at the phone, then at the server tower.
"You think a live stream saves you, Angela?" Julian whispered. "The moment those troopers take a step, I press this button. The server doesn't just upload files—it initiates a thermal purge. The entire vault goes up in white phosphorus. We all burn, and the password dies with us."
The state troopers froze. The threat of a chemical fire in an enclosed basement was a death sentence.

Sarah looked at the server, then at the baby in her arms. She realized the truth. As long as she stayed in this vault, as long as she played their game, Hope would always be a target. A password to be stolen.
"Arthur," Sarah whispered, her voice suddenly calm, devoid of the fear that had defined her for days.
Arthur didn't look back, keeping his eyes on Julian. "Stay down, Sarah."
"No," she said softly. "Look at me."

Arthur turned his head slightly. Sarah was standing next to the main power breaker for the server tower. Her hand was resting on the high-voltage lever.
"If the password dies," Sarah said, looking directly into Julian’s eyes, "the game ends."
