Chapter 6: The Betrayal

### Chapter 6: The Betrayal

The county jail was unusually quiet.

Eleanor Vance sat alone inside a private holding cell.

Her expensive silk blouse had been replaced with a plain gray inmate uniform.

The jewelry was gone.

Her wedding ring.

Her diamond earrings.

Even her designer watch.

Everything had been placed inside a sealed evidence bag.

For the first time in decades...

She looked ordinary.

A correctional officer approached the bars.

"Your attorney is here."

Eleanor immediately stood.

"I knew he wouldn't disappoint me."

Moments later...

Richard Collins entered the interview room carrying a thick leather briefcase.

He had represented the Vance family for nearly twenty-five years.

He closed the door behind him.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Finally...

Eleanor smiled.

"I assume you've already arranged my release."

Richard remained standing.

"No."

The smile disappeared.

"What do you mean, no?"

He slowly opened the briefcase.

Inside were copies of witness statements.

Arthur Hale's testimony.

Mrs. Hargrove's recording.

Security reports.

Photographs.

"It isn't just one witness anymore."

Richard said quietly.

"There are five."

Eleanor folded her arms.

"They're employees."

"I paid them."

"They'll change their stories."

Richard looked directly into her eyes.

"They've already signed sworn affidavits."

Silence.

Eleanor's jaw tightened.

"They're lying."

"They have nothing to gain."

Richard replied.

"But they have something to lose if they commit perjury."

He slid another document across the table.

"I also reviewed James Vance's will this morning."

Eleanor frowned.

"What about it?"

Richard hesitated.

"You've never seen the final amendment."

Her face hardened.

"What amendment?"

Richard watched her carefully.

"The one James signed two years before he died."

Eleanor stared.

"There wasn't another amendment."

"There was."

Richard pushed the document toward her.

"I confirmed it with the probate court."

Eleanor grabbed the papers.

Her hands began turning the pages faster.

Then...

She stopped.

Her breathing became uneven.

"No..."

she whispered.

"This isn't possible."

Richard remained silent.

She continued reading.

Every major asset.

Every investment.

Every piece of real estate.

Transferred...

Upon conviction...

To Sarah.

The papers slipped from Eleanor's hands.

"He..."

she whispered.

"He never trusted me."

Richard answered honestly.

"I don't think he ever did."

For several long moments...

Neither spoke.

Then Eleanor laughed.

A strange...

Empty laugh.

"So even after death..."

"He still wins."

Richard closed the file.

"No."

"He tried to protect the people he loved."

---

At County Memorial Hospital...

Sarah had finally fallen asleep.

The medication eased the pain in her back.

The baby's heartbeat remained strong.

Arthur sat quietly beside the window.

Mrs. Hargrove had gone home only after promising to return in the morning.

The room was peaceful.

Until someone knocked softly.

Arthur opened the door.

A young woman stood outside.

She wore a navy business suit.

Held a briefcase.

And looked nervous.

"My name is Olivia Bennett."

She extended a business card.

"I'm from Collins & Associates."

Arthur frowned.

"Richard Collins sent you?"

She nodded.

"He couldn't come himself."

Arthur let her enter.

Sarah slowly opened her eyes.

"I'm sorry..."

Olivia said gently.

"I didn't want to wake you."

Sarah smiled faintly.

"It's alright."

Olivia placed a folder on the bedside table.

"Mr. Collins asked me to personally deliver these."

Sarah looked down.

The first page carried the Vance family seal.

"What is it?"

Olivia hesitated.

"Ownership documents."

Sarah looked confused.

"For what?"

Olivia swallowed.

"For everything."

Arthur slowly nodded.

"He already knows."

Olivia opened the folder.

"The mansion."

"The vineyards."

"The investment companies."

"The charitable foundation."

"The shares."

"The trusts."

"They're legally yours now..."

"...pending the outcome of Mrs. Vance's criminal case."

Sarah stared at the papers.

"I never wanted any of this."

Olivia smiled kindly.

"I believe you."

"That's probably why James Vance left it to you."

Sarah lowered her eyes.

"I would've traded every dollar..."

"...to have my husband back."

No one spoke.

Because everyone in the room knew...

That was true.

---

Across town...

The evening news interrupted regular programming.

A smiling anchor looked into the camera.

"We have breaking developments in the Eleanor Vance case."

Behind her appeared photographs of the mansion.

The arrest.

Sarah being loaded into the ambulance.

"The Vance family attorney has confirmed that a confidential amendment to the late James Vance's estate plan may dramatically change ownership of the family's multi-billion-dollar fortune."

Restaurants fell silent.

Living rooms across the state turned toward their televisions.

Reporters continued speaking.

"If the allegations against Eleanor Vance are proven in court..."

"...control of the Vance estate will pass to her pregnant daughter-in-law, Sarah Collins Vance."

The news spread faster than anyone expected.

Phones rang.

Investors called.

Board members panicked.

Within an hour...

The Vance Foundation received hundreds of media inquiries.

---

Late that night...

Arthur stood alone outside Sarah's hospital room.

He looked down the quiet hallway.

Something felt wrong.

A nurse pushed a medication cart past him.

Two janitors mopped the floor.

Everything appeared normal.

Then...

He noticed a man wearing hospital scrubs.

The man wasn't carrying a patient chart.

He wasn't wearing an identification badge.

And he had been standing outside Sarah's room...

For almost two minutes.

Watching.

Arthur slowly walked toward him.

"Can I help you?"

The man looked startled.

"No..."

"I'm looking for Room 418."

Arthur glanced at the room numbers.

"They're on the other wing."

The stranger forced a smile.

"My mistake."

He turned quickly.

Walked toward the elevator.

Arthur watched him leave.

Something about him...

Didn't feel like a mistake.

Arthur quietly stepped into Sarah's room.

She was still sleeping peacefully.

The baby monitor continued its steady rhythm.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Arthur walked to the window.

Far below...

A black sedan sat parked across the street.

Its engine running.

Its headlights off.

Someone inside was watching the hospital.

Arthur's expression darkened.

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

And quietly called Sergeant Reyes.

"I think..."

he said in a low voice,

"...this isn't over."

Hundreds of feet away...

Inside the black sedan...

A man lowered his binoculars.

He picked up his phone.

"She's alive."

A cold voice answered from the other end.

"I know."

"What are your instructions?"

A long silence followed.

Then came the reply.

"If Sarah survives..."

"...everything Eleanor built is gone."

The line went quiet.

The man looked back toward the glowing hospital windows.

Then started the engine.

Because someone else...

May you like

Had just entered the game.

To be continued...
