Chapter 44: The Shadow of the Marine

Chapter 44: The Shadow of the Marine
Before Sarah’s thumb could touch the glass, a massive explosion tore through the refinery’s river-facing wall.
Black smoke and river water flooded the lower deck. The glass panels shattered into a million diamond-like shards.
Through the haze, a figure moved with lethal, terrifying speed.
Arthur Hale.
He didn't have his tactical gear from Chicago. He was wearing a plain gray suit, but his hands held a modified tactical shotgun. He fired three consecutive rounds, the heavy lead slugs shattering the server racks and sending the guards diving for cover.

"Sarah! Move!" Arthur roared, his voice hoarse, his chest still bandaged beneath his shirt.
Sarah didn't run toward him. She sprinted toward the glass staircase, her eyes fixed on the upper level. Eleanor tried to block her path, but Sarah drove her elbow hard into the older woman's throat, sending the Vance matriarch crashing into the shattered glass below.
Arthur stepped between Sarah and the remaining Consortium guards, his shotgun barking in the confined space.

"You followed me," Sarah shouted down at him as she reached the landing. "I told you I’m done with you, Arthur!"
"You don't have to trust me, Sarah!" Arthur yelled back, slamming a fresh shell into the loader as blood began to seep through his gray suit shirt. "But I’m not letting James’s granddaughter die in this city!"
