Chapter 53: The White Descent

The Swiss Alps were a wall of blinding white as Thomas Sterling’s armored SUV roared down the winding roads of the pass.

Sarah sat in the back, Hope secured in a heated travel pod. Across from her sat her father, his face bandaged, an oxygen mask hanging around his neck. He looked like a man who was running on nothing but pure spite and adrenaline.

"Leo Vance was the architect from day one," Sterling said, coughing into his hand. "James found out his own son was selling the family’s logistics network to the European shadow banks. He tried to cut him out by transferring the assets to you. Leo faked his death to draw James into the open, then poisoned him."

"And Arthur?" Sarah asked, her hands gripped around her knees.

"Arthur belongs to the highest bidder, Sarah," Sterling hissed. "He was Leo’s handler when he was in the military. They’ve been running black operations under the Vance umbrella for ten years."

Suddenly, the sky above them growled.

A sleek, black Eurocopter descended through the snow flurries, hovering twenty feet above the highway. The side door slid open, revealing Arthur Hale sitting at the mounted heavy machine gun.

Thud-thud-thud-thud!

The heavy armor-piercing rounds tore through the SUV’s hood, instantly shredding the engine block. The vehicle spun violently out of control, slamming into the concrete snow-shed wall at eighty miles an hour.
