Chapter 69: The Black Current

Chapter 69: The Black Current
The explosion of the cryogenic line threw the hold into total darkness.
"Run!" Arthur’s voice croaked through the dark. He had used the distraction to break free from Leo's grip, driving his tactical knife deep into Leo's leg.
Sarah didn't look for her father or her husband in the freezing fog. She turned and ran up the iron stairs, her breath pluming in the sudden winter air inside the ship's belly. She burst onto the main deck just as the Vietnamese river police cutters began to surround the MV Falcon, their sirens wailing across the wide water.
Reyes’s international contact detail had finally arrived.
Thomas Sterling and Eleanor Vance emerged from the bridge, running toward the ship's private helipad where a black chopper was already idling, its rotors cutting the mist.

"Sarah!" her father shouted through the wind. "Come with us! It's your last chance!"
"I don't have a father!" Sarah screamed back over the storm.
She turned to the side railing. Arthur was beside her, his body broken, his face covered in frost and blood. He looked down at the dark, rushing water of the river sixty feet below.
"We jump on three, Sarah," Arthur said, his hand reaching for hers.
"One..."
Before he could hit two, a figure burst from the hatch behind them. Leo. His leg was bleeding heavily, his face distorted by frostbite and madness. He didn't have a weapon; he just lunged straight toward the canvas sling on Sarah’s chest, his hands clawing for his daughter.
Arthur tackled him mid-air.

The two men crashed over the iron railing together.
Sarah screamed as the shadows of Arthur Hale and Leo Vance twisted in the air, falling down, down, down into the black, churning currents of the Mekong river below. A massive splash swallowed them both.
