Chapter 40: The Mirror Matrix

Chapter 40: The Mirror Matrix

Arthur didn't waste time on the lock. He fired two rounds into the chain holding Richard's chair, freeing him. "Thomas, get him out of here! Disarm the timer!"
Sarah walked straight toward the glass double doors of the server core.
Inside, the room was bathed in a surreal, blinding red light. Thousands of blade servers were humming, their cooling fans sounding like a jet engine.
Standing at the central console was Julian Vance. His clothes were stained with blood, his eyes wild and bloodshot. In his left hand, he held a massive industrial detonator connected to the building's main gas lines. In his right, he had a heavy-caliber revolver.
But he wasn't alone.
Standing in the shadow behind the central console was another figure. A tall, elegant woman with perfectly pinned silver hair, wearing an orange Department of Corrections jumpsuit beneath a heavy mink coat.
Eleanor Vance.
She had escaped custody during the chaos of Julian's breakout.
"Welcome to the family reunion, Sarah," Eleanor said, her voice smooth, devoid of any madness, making her infinitely more terrifying. "You thought Julian was the mastermind? My brother is a brilliant tech-thief, but he lacks the stomach for true leadership."
Sarah stopped ten feet away, Arthur stepping up beside her, his rifle aimed directly at Eleanor's head.
"Eleanor," Arthur growled. "It's over. The police have the building surrounded."
"The police don't own the airspace, Arthur," Eleanor smiled, pointing to the ceiling, where the faint sound of a heavy transport helicopter could be heard hovering over the roof helipad.
Julian raised his revolver, aiming it straight at baby Hope's head. "Give us the drive, Sarah. Upload the biometric sequence to the core. If you don't, I pull this trigger, Eleanor drops the detonator, and this entire tower becomes a pillar of fire."
Sarah looked at the drive. She looked at Julian. Then, she looked at the computer screen behind him.

The screen didn't show the Vance logistics grid. It showed a live video feed of the hospital nursery in Savannah—the place where she had left her real child.
Sarah’s breath caught. She looked down at the tactical carrier against her chest.
She unzipped the carrier slowly.
Inside was no baby. It was a high-density decoy weight wired with a tracking transmitter. She had left Hope with Sergeant Reyes three hours ago in a secure federal bunker. She had used herself as the bait.
Julian saw the empty carrier and let out a guttural scream of pure rage. "You bitch!"
He pulled the trigger.
BANG!
Arthur lunged in front of Sarah, taking the heavy revolver round straight to his chest vest, the impact throwing him backward into the server racks.
At that exact second, the glass windows behind Eleanor shattered into a million pieces. A heavy Aegis grappling hook swung through the opening, followed by Thomas Sterling himself, a submachine gun blazing in his hands.
The room exploded into a chaotic matrix of crossfire, shattering glass, and screaming servers.
Sarah dropped to the floor, crawling toward the central console, her fingers reaching for the master override switch to lock out the grid permanently. Her hand wrapped around the lever.
But as she looked up through the smoke, she froze.
The computer screen had changed. The live feed of the nursery was gone. In its place was a live, scrolling text message from an unknown number:
Thank you for the distraction, Sarah. The biometric data from your thumbprint on the Toledo bank vault was all we needed. Hope is with us now. Come to London if you want her back.
Sarah looked toward the shattered window. Eleanor and Julian were gone, a heavy rope trailing up toward the roaring helicopter above. Arthur lay bleeding against the servers, his eyes fluttering. Her father, Thomas Sterling, was reloading his weapon, his face grimed with oil.

The countdown timer on Richard’s vest downstairs hit zero, but instead of an explosion, a massive, deafening silence fell over the network as the lights across Chicago began to blink out one by one.
The world had just gone dark. The real architects had her daughter. And Sarah was standing in the ruins of the empire she had just destroyed.
